Davos is best known for two things — the skiing and the forum — but there is a good deal more to the town than either, in every season. Here is a starting list for anyone with time to look beyond the pistes.
The mountains, year-round
The five ski mountains don't switch off in summer. Several mountain railways run through the warmer months, opening up hiking, mountain biking, and simply riding up for the view and a meal at a mountain restaurant. In winter, beyond skiing there is tobogganing, snowshoeing, and winter walking on cleared high paths.
The Kirchner Museum
The expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner spent the last years of his life in Davos, and the town's Kirchner Museum holds one of the most significant collections of his work. It is a genuine cultural draw — a reminder that Davos has a serious artistic and intellectual history alongside the sport.
The Schatzalp
Reached by its own funicular above Davos Platz, the Schatzalp is a historic building that began life as a sanatorium in the early twentieth century and is woven into the town's literary history (see our guide on the Magic Mountain). Today it's a destination in its own right, with views over the valley and a botanical alpine garden in summer.
The lake
The Davosersee anchors the Dorf end of town — a place to walk, picnic, and swim in summer, and a scenic backdrop year-round. A loop of the shore is one of the simplest pleasures in Davos.
The promenade and the town
Davos Platz's promenade is the spine of the town — shops, cafés, restaurants, and the Congress Centre strung along it. It is where the everyday life of Davos happens, and a good place to get a feel for the town as more than a resort.
Events through the year
Davos has a full calendar beyond the forum — most famously the Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament between Christmas and New Year (our guide here), alongside concerts, sporting events, and festivals across the seasons.
